Der Fehler (2021)
Whilst researching stories of exploration and voyages I came across artist Bas Jan Ader and his attempt to cross The Atlantic Ocean in his boat the Ocean Wave. A voyage almost destined to fail and one of many examples of how the sea and nature can seemingly make people disappear forever. Another example that I referenced many times was Sir John Franklin's lost expedition that disappeared whilst hunting for the North West Passage for the British Empire. The tale of courage however ultimate failure inspired me to create a piece of work that embodied the spirit of these adventurers, however ultimately carries the same certainty of doom.
This sculpture was created by me from cut wood that over a long period of time I glued together to craft this rudimentary vessel. The ship was finished with a brown wood stain and a dark red cloth sail. This boat symbolises my want to explore within the struggle of Covid lockdown and set sail into an open world. However as referenced in my research of explorations throughout history I concluded that such a voyage would be foolish and ultimately a mistake.
This boat represents the journey of thought that I went through. wanting to explore - realising that is would be a failure
