Lost Boat (2021)

 This animation boil was my first experimentation with creating a digital piece that involved an element of movement and animation. I wanted to pursue working in animation largely due to the restrictions that Covid enforced, making working on sculpture in a studio space difficult. 

I created the Gif by drawing two images of the boat on photoshop and then combining them into a short clip where they flick between the two slightly different images. I wanted to capture a sense of movement and life within the image, something I haven't experimented with before. 

The themes that I was researching at the time centred around the different acts of exploration and voyages throughout history and connecting it to the idea of escapism. Life within lockdown stuck in my house and not able to leave the country or even the city left me longing for this romantic vision of floating away on a boat and exploring parts of the world I haven't seen. However the stories of exploration and colonialism such as Captain Scott and Sir John Franklin were brutal reminders that the history of exploration has been followed closely by death and disaster.

This animation is the start of my rose tinted dream of exploration. I like to think I have created a scene that is reflective of what I desired within my life - a boat sat ready for me to launch and escape the mundane life.
