Monkey Skull (2021) Artefact series
This work was inspired by Richard III and who his remains were found under a carpark in Leicester. The idea that a monarchs remains could be lost and found in common everyday place really interested me and made me contemplate why we are obsessed with giving the dead dignified burials.
From this historical event I decided to create my own tale of similar nature about a monkey that's remains were discovered in Wigan. This is my exploration of what makes historical remains like bones so important - and how they can appear in the strangest places.
This piece was created using monkey puzzle wood and carved using traditional whittling knives.
