My Nose (2022) Artefact series

From researching various museum exhibition statues are often a main feature, sometimes with full rooms dedicated to displaying statues from periods such as ancient Greek, Roman or Egyptian. Some prime examples of this that I've visited are Chatsworth House, the British Museum and the Liverpool Walker Gallery. From looking at all of these examples what interested me the most is the art of capturing features of people through history. The artists choice to represent Cleopatra or Julius Caesar in stone will forever be how they are seen in history. These faces that exaggerate their perfectly shaped head and chiseled chin, or flowing hair will always paint the picture of great leaders of the past who's legacy will allow them to be heroes.

This sculpture is therefore how I wish to be remembered in history. I have carved a representation of my nose as I believe its a rather distinctive part of my face. The difference however between this statue of my face and a statue of Julius Caesar is that the stone statue will last a long time whilst mine is destined to rot away after a shorter period of time.

This sculpture is created from wood and carved using traditional whittling knives.

Dimensions: 20 x 9.8cm
